What got you started in skateboarding?

I started skating when I was 7 cuz they built a skatepark near my house and it was the only place i was allowed to go without my mom there.....then it became a habit....and now I still love it.

In 1965, my dad bought a skateboard from the PX while we were stationed in Columbus, Ohio (Ft. Hayes) . He ate it bad and came home scraped up pretty bad. 7 kids in our family were amused at the surfing shroud placed on skateboards and thought it was way cool but steel wheels on hard surfaces? Even then we thought it was dumb :) but the Hobie team on TV continued creating that cool surfing flavor throughout the nation and songs from Jan and Dean and Surfer Magazine leaving guys like me with intense beach nostalgia. Later my dad was stationed in San Diego(Imperial Beach) in 1966 where I got my first skateboard with clay wheels. Skating every day I was able to go up and down curbs and pop wheelies. Then my family got stationed in Monterey while pops went to 'nam for two terms. Skateboarding became more of a crazed downhill injury sentence as I led a small group of skaters to bomb 30mph hills on clay wheels and chinzy rollerskate stamped trucks. The talent and expertise to ride these death traps down hills bordered insanity and street surfer joe champ. Then when pops returned from 'nam after two terms(2nd cut short, Purple Heart) we ended up in Michigan. I spent my HS years playing football and wrestling. I skateboarded occassionally but picked up a unicycle to placate the balance monster within me that attacks me daily today ... after I graduated from HS, I moved to CA to live with my bro attending San Diego State. I picked up a skateboard at San Diego Surf Shop that Joe Roper put together. I skated Tourmaline Hill daily. La Costa was next. The rest is history :)

It started when I saw my homie Trini Rodriguez ollie a 3 stair. It was the first time I saw skateboarding and from that moment I knew I had to try it. It was almost unbelievable how the board stuck to his feet as he floated over the small steps. I've been doin it ever since for the past 8 Years.
